How to dress baby for sleep ?

The news

It’s one of those questions that you ask the most often as a young parent: How should I dress baby for the temperature? With the fear of overdressing or underdressing them, it’s a real headache for parents in baby’s first year. When dressing baby for the night, it is important to ensure just the right balance between comfort and safety. Babies need plenty of sleep to grow, develop and stay in good health, and this starts with how they are dressed at night.

What is the ideal room temperature for baby?

Before knowing how to dress your baby at night, it is important to check the temperature of their room. The clothes in which to dress your infant will essentially depend on the season and the room temperature. The Institute for the Prevention of Domestic Accidents (IPAD) recommends an ambient temperature of between 16 and 20° C.

It is worth investing in a thermometer to check the temperature of baby’s room before each bedtime.

  • -Close windows and blinds during the day in extreme heat and only open them during the night or very early morning when the outdoor temperature is lower.
  • -Leave your little one’s bedroom door open to create a draught.

Here are some tips for dressing baby at night:

1/ Ensure that your baby is lying comfortably: Before starting to dress baby, ensure that they are comfortable. Change their nappy if necessary and feed them if they’re hungry.

2/ Choose comfortable clothes: When you choose clothes for baby, ensure that they are comfortable and easy to put on. Soft cotton clothes are often the most comfortable for newborns. Avoid clothes that are too tight or that could rub against your baby’s skin, since this can irritate them.

3/ Measure the room temperature: The temperature of baby’s room is a critical factor to take into account when dressing baby for the night. Baby’s ideal room temperature is about 18 – 20 degrees. You can use a thermometer to measure the temperature of the room.

4/ Avoid using blankets: it is important to avoid giving baby a blanket when they’re sleeping, since this may increase the risk of them suffocating. However, if you must use a blanket, ensure that it is properly secured in place and cannot be pulled over baby’s face.

5/ Monitor your baby during the night: It is important to monitor your baby during the night to ensure that they are comfortable and will not get too warm. If your baby is sweating a lot, and they have a hot neck, take a few layers off them.
